Stuart Avery (he/him) MA, BA

Psychotherapist & Clinical Associate

I’m a BACP-accredited psychotherapist, with a 1st class masters degree in Counselling from The University of Manchester. I aim to provide a safe, non-judgemental space where we can work collaboratively to understand you in depth, and recognise themes and patterns in your experiences. I believe that a strong rapport and a trusting relationship are key to successful therapeutic work – I work in a relational and person-centred way, and I’m curious about the many aspects that make up our personalities (including those we have a difficult relationship with or feel ashamed or sensitive about). I’m open-minded, compassionate and respectful of the fact that coming for therapy can feel daunting or challenging.

I am an integrative therapist, which means that I work with a range of different therapeutic models, depending on the person I’m working with and the nature of the issues they’re bringing. I’m a firm believer that the therapy model should fit around the individual person and not the other way around. We all have preferred ways of relating and communicating, and different lenses for experiencing the world. My job is to understand yours and work in whatever way is most helpful to you.

My integrative practice is underpinned by Person-Centred values, which means accepting you as the complex and multi-faceted human being that you are, providing compassion and support, working with integrity and authenticity, and not pathologizing or judging the issues you have brought. I use a combination of therapeutic models, including IFS (Internal Family Systems), CFT (Compassion Focus Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Analytical Therapy) and Psychodynamic therapy, depending on what we’re working on.

My main areas of interest and specialism are working with trauma (including complex PTSD), and the LGBT, queer and non-binary community. I am a sex and kink positive therapist, and if you’re here to work on intimate relationships and connections, I am experienced with working with a wide range of relationship styles. I also enjoy supporting neurodiverse and disabled clients.

Some of the other areas I specialise in (not an exhaustive list) are: anxiety and worry, OCD, depression and the impact of sexual abuse, rape or assault. Additionally, I also specialise in self-esteem and identity issues, relationship difficulties, mindfulness, sexual issues, clients escaping persecution in their country of origin, difficulties with drugs and alcohol and chemsex.

I was drawn to work as a therapist after accessing therapy myself on various occasions through my life. I found the experience of therapy transformative, insightful and extremely valuable. I wanted to help other people in the same way, so I decided to train as a therapist.

Being a therapist doesn’t mean I have all the answers. I’m as complex and flawed as everyone else! But I strongly believe that self-exploration and understanding can help us all live a life that is more authentic and fulfilling.

I grew up in the south east of England, and moved to London at 18, then relocated to Manchester a few years later, where I trained at The University of Manchester. I regularly go between London and Manchester, and I am a keen traveller whenever I get the chance to go and explore new places, cultures and people.
