Matei Dudu MSc, MSW, PGDip, BA (he/him)
Systemic Family Psychotherapist & HPG Clinical Associate
I’m a Systemic Family Psychotherapist with more than 18 years of experience working in healthcare, third sector and private practice settings. In therapy, I value providing a space that is safe, warm, welcoming and non-judgmental. I value building trust with my clients and working collaboratively to develop a deep understanding of the current struggles at hand. I tend to focus on present-day issues in addition to past experiences, while emphasising what changes might help you move forward.
In therapy together we will explore your present-day issues, personal history, family history, significant relationships, relationship difficulties, cultural contexts, identities, transitions and sources of stress. I will want to understand your individual story & strengths and together we will work to understand the context in which you have come to struggle rather than simplistically judging your situation as ‘pathological’ or ‘dysfunctional.’ My goal is to offer you a constant and stable environment to work through times of change and uncertainty and to move towards change.
I have expertise in working with gender identity, sexuality, neurodiversity and immigration. I provide individual, relationship and family therapy and openly welcome people in non-traditional relationships and family arrangements. My practice is informed by social justice principles and I am invested in queer and trans people reclaiming and renegotiating therapy to be non-oppressive spaces where they too can find healing instead of being judged and pathologised. I am also interested in the body mind-connection and, moreover, how stress and trauma impact our mental and physical health.
I have extensive experience in helping children and adults recover from stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, low mood, self-harm and bereavement as well as neurodiversity, autism and ADHD. I also specialise in helping people work through stress as related to our relationships. This might include family conflict, relationship difficulties, family estrangement or exploring the impact of mental & physical health issues on our lives. I am designated as Highly Specialist in the area of gender care and help people explore their gender identity, navigate gender reassignment decisions and address any potential related issues with partners and family.
I trained with the Faculty of Medicine at Leeds University and achieved an MSc in Systemic Family Psychotherapy. I am registered with the UKCP (UK Counselling & Psychotherapy) and AFT (Association of Family Therapy). I am additionally a member of BAGIS (British Association of Gender Identity Specialists). Born and raised in Transylvania, Romania, I moved to the UK in 2008 and now live in Yorkshire with my partner and our spoiled cat. I’m also an avid hiker, a singer in an LGBTQ+ choir, and deeply grateful for the support of my friends, family, and the queer community.
