Existential Humanistic Therapy

Existential humanism is a type of therapy that primarily focuses on working through our deepest fears, identifying our authentic selves, taking personal responsibility for our choices and finding meaning in life. From a philosophical perspective, this therapy views human nature as being basically good with the full potential to build fulfilling relationships and make choices that benefit ourselves as well as others.

In practice, the therapist speaks from a place of authenticity, acts with empathy and values maintaining unconditional positive regard for the client. The client is directed and encouraged to explore who they truly are and to think and act authentically and responsibly. In this work, a person effectively frees themselves of assumptions, positions, habits or opinions that block them from finding meaning or living a fuller life. Often times this means exploring our ultimate fears about isolation, pain, despair, loneliness and dying as these anxieties are frequently the real issue underlying our day to day problems. Gaining a deeper understanding in the above ways allows for growth and self-actualisation which ultimately makes room for personal freedom and resilience.

It is very important that you only do what you love to do. You may be poor, you may go hungry, you may lose your car, you may have to move into a shabby place to live but you will totally live. And at the end of your days you will bless your life because you have done what you came here to do. Otherwise, you will live your life as a prostitute. You will do things only for a reason, to please other people, and you will never have lived, and you will not have a pleasant death.
— Elisabeth Kübler Ross
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing - the last of the human freedoms - to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
— Viktor Frankl
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
— Friedrich Nietzsche
